In this camp, our instructors look to stimulate the passion for softball amongst our young, beginner players and provide them time to work on their offensive and defensive skills while improving technique and having fun.  We will be working on hitting, fielding, base running and several mental aspects of the game. Instructors include current and former college players.  Director Karen Puskas has been a part of the Shepaug Baseball and Softball family for 15 years.  A former college player and Shepaug Valley School coach, she enjoys teaching all aspects of the game at all levels.      This is a summer softball team for 7 and 8 year olds. See below for information about costs and time commitments for this team so that we can get a commitment from families who are interested in playing this summer.

            The philosophy for this summer program will be similar but not identical to our spring program. We will focus on skill development and continue to build our knowledge regarding softball game strategies. Players will begin to focus on positions that fit their current skill set and have opportunities to try new positions at appropriate times. The coaching staff will make every effort to get every player into the game at some point, but playing time may not be equal. There may be some players who play every inning of a game and other players who may only play one inning or get one at bat. We will not be batting everyone if we have twelve players at the game. The coaches will be sure to make it a rewarding and positive experience while maintaining the appropriate priorities for youth sports.

            This will also be an opportunity for players to learn how to compete to win, while maintaining a high level of sportsmanship. The coaches will expect players to be focused on the game at all times. Players will often be reminded that we support teammates when they make a mistake, and that softball is full of mistakes! We will also help the players understand that it is the success and improvement of the group that takes priority over individual success.
